Hi, my name is Tauna Grinager. Horses have been an integral part of my life since I learned of their existence as a young child. At about the age of 7, I started doing chores in exchange for riding and time with the horses at a local stable. The horses were the best company a young girl could want! I was 16 when I found Gemini, a 7yo grey Arab mare destined to be my trail-blazing partner. Several years later I found Tess, a lovely bay Thoroughbred mare, also 7yo. A shining light in my life is Ginger, Gemini's rose grey Quarab daughter (now 8yo). All 3 have been incredible teachers. Tess and Ginger led me down a path of finding a softer, gentler way to communicate; while they all motivated me toward a search for higher quality barefoot care. Before I knew it, I took over the care of their hooves and loved the process so much, I offered my services for other horse owners in 2002, leaving my previous career of Technical Recruiting. My trimming style is non-invasive and keeps most horses quite comfortable. There are so many variables to consider for each horse, taking into account their environment, diet, lifestyle and owner's expectations. Hoof care can never be a one-size-fits-all process. My education on the care of hooves has come from a variety of viewpoints. My earliest mentor was Martha Olivo - her insistence on many dissections was invaluable. From there, I went on to learn from Gene Ovnicek (the creator of the Natural Balance shoeing system). Mark Jeldness (founding AHA member). And, of course, Pete Ramey. Initially I thought his ideas couldn't be right. They were so different than much of what I had been taught! But after one clinic with him, I found myself incorporating some of his ideas, and what do you know...selectively trimming less DID get better results! I have recently joined PHCP (Pacific Hoof Care Practitioners) in order to further my education and have a network of like-minded professionals for sharing ideas and concerns. I have signed on at the Student Practitioner level in order to complete a media presentation before moving on in their certification program. I chose this group because of their focus on providing ongoing education opportunities, and the network of support is incredible. |
